Education Programs
With the aim of improving the quality of and access to education as well as the living conditions in rural areas, this program caters to schools and health centres, by educating the community and its children. Special attention is given to promoting child education activities, encouraging children to go to school, all the while promoting gender equality and advocating to increase the awareness of child rights. We collaborate with community and schools to encourage non-violence, as well as better hygiene practices and support them through training programs and the provision of relevant sanitary and healthcare equipment. All of our projects, excluding the Adult Literacy Project, are prepared in response to the Cambodian Ministry of Education's Child Friendly School Framework. You can download a copy of this framework here.
The file below contains detailed information on the the projects run under the Education Program.

Child Development Project
The Child Development Project offers support to children and health centres in slum communities.
It works to heighten the awareness of children in the community concerning: child sexual abuse; road safety; drug abuse and prevention of HIV/AIDS through the Child to Child Approach. These child to child activities encourage children to become Child Club Leaders, taking part in the education process in educating their peers. Scholarships were granted in 2011, which helped financially support the successful Child Club Leaders from poor families to continue their education. The project also caters to improving the community's health centre with bio-medical waste management facility, maternity facilities and supplies for emergency services to surrounding villages. |

Child Friendly School ProjectWith a focus on promoting the Education of Girls this project spreads information on the value of education, children's rights, child labor, sexual reproductive health, discrimination, violence and gender issues. Vulnerable girls are also recruited and supported with scholarships.
On the 8th of March, 2012, International Women's Day was celebrated: 30 different events were held at 30 schools with 8,909 participants. Training sessions were held and marches took place, along with speeches by guest speakers and songs promoting gender equality. The project also worked to setup counselling rooms in schools with equipment to encourage and support the delivery of important information, such as menstruation and sexual reproductive problems. Shortly after its setup, a total of 347 girls sought and received counselling. See file below for more information.

Transition Classes for Children in Remote AreasMany children in the rural provinces of Cambodia are excluded from public schools simply because they live too far away to attend. Working closely with he District Office of Education, Youth and Sport and local authorities, Sovann Phoum is able to provide technical, financial and material support to provide classes to children in distant communities.
Adult Literacy ClassesCambodia holds an illiteracy rate of 22% for adults over 15 years of age. These classes are developed in collaboration with government authorities, supporting capacity building, study materials, mobile libraries and follow ups with attendees. On average, approximately 90% of our attendees are women.
